Magic of ATTENTION - what does that mean?
Magic is "...an action of moving from the ether into reality, a transformation. Something that never existed suddenly appears." (Fortune Magazine, November 2006, pg. 43)
Hmm. Magic is a transformation. That makes sense to me.
As I was thinking about the words "Magic of Attention" I began thinking back to a time in my childhood when Magic happened easily and effortlessly.
I was in love with the Magical Fairies, the Unicorns and the pixie people. I just knew they understood me and would bring magic into my life. I felt so close to them.
Then I grew up and stopped thinking about the Magic....until I began to question a lot of things happening in my life.
Lately, I have been thinking about Magic again and how I can bring it back into my life.
Actually, it never left - I'm the one who has laid dormant for many years. When I think of Magic now I think about our bodies. How can the cells, blood, heart, etc. know what to do? Yes, scientifically it can be explained... or can it? The scientists still are not sure.
Magic is all about trusting the unknown - realizing that something can be transformed from one thing into another. It is in that transformation period that we must pay attention and open up to the magic. So the magic is in the ATTENTION that you give it.
When I look back on my life - I find it so magical - even the bad stuff! I think about the birth of my children and grandchildren....about the circle of life. I think about how I survived my early beginnings and the magical way I was brought to a better situation. When I notice Magic I am then Attentive to my feelings, what's happening both inside and outside my body, I notice what I haven't noticed and the "ole Magical" feelings are back - this time to stay!
Then I notice a new leaf growing on the tree, grass growing again, a new child being born, someone winning the lottery and so forth.
You can't explain it - it just happens. That's how magic works. And you'll only see it if you're paying attention to life.
I still believe in fairies, gnomes, and unicorns. I still believe that — if I am attentive — I will see the Magic happening right now.
Are you ready for some magic? |

Exercise: Magic of Attention
Please have a pad and pen close by so you
can record your thoughts or answers.
An Audio Meditation that goes with this exercise is available below. In three minutes, you can change your life! That's all it takes. These meditations are not edited - these are simply tools to help you achieve. All are copywritten.
BE FULLY PRESENT for this exercise. You can close your eyes or leave them open. Please turn off your cell phone and unplug your regular phone, turn on some soothing music and enjoy this exercise. No one is judging you. Be honest with yourself.
BEFORE doing this exercise, think about how Paying Attention can create Magic in your life.
On a separate piece of paper recreate what you see below.
Close your eyes and go back to when you were a child ... remember the magical characters you once "knew" ... the magical events you ''saw".
Remember the unicorn, the "invisible" friend or the angel that brought magic into your life. Remember the details through your ability to focus and pay attention. Add you feelings - were you happy, did you believe you saw things that no one else saw? Was the fairy or unicorn special and you were the only one who could see it?
Write your thoughts down. In detail if possible. While you're doing that - feel the feelings again.
When you're ready - start writing what's magical in your life now — the trees, the flowers, the clouds that form into shapes, the change of seasons, the laughter of a child. What brings magic to you?
What are you noticing that you have not been noticing? Make a game out of this - be silly and enjoy!
Be creative - have fun!

AN EASTER PACKAGE
…the flower withers, but the seed remains. ~Kahlil Gibran
Each year, at this time of the season, my mind wanders back to my orphanage years. Easter was celebrated by going to church, and then later hunting for eggs that we all painted together.
One year, when I was about seven years old, I received a package in the mail. It was a huge surprise since I had never received a package before. I was excited and very curious as to who would send me a gift and I wondered just what might be in it. I noticed that the package was from my brother.
Approximately six months prior to Easter, my brother was adopted out of the orphanage by an older couple who had lost a baby during WW II. It had been their only child, but the mother could not nourish her baby with her breast milk because they were fleeing and malnourished. Sadly, the baby ended up dying in her arms. Years later, this same couple wanted to adopt a son. My brother was one year younger than I and we were very close. Even though he had his own set of friends in the orphanage, we were fortunate to be in the same group since many siblings were split up. I was always very protective of him.
I remember the day when that couple came to pick up my brother. There had been no forewarning to my brother or myself. The couple liked me as well and expressed an interest in me, but they could not take me because my mother had never signed any papers of release for me. She had only signed papers for my two brothers and my youngest brother had already been adopted a number of years before. It was a strange day, one moment my brother and I were together and the next moment he was gone from my life. I felt empty and alone. I felt sad and forgotten.
That Easter a package came in the mail from my brother. I opened it eagerly. Just the very idea of getting a packet in the mail was exciting for me. As I opened the package, I reached in with curiosity and excitement that only a child could display. I pulled out a little pink rabbit. What happened after that was beyond my own understanding at that time. I clutched that little pink rabbit and started to cry as I had never cried before. I fell down to my knees and wailed with sadness because for the very first time, I could physically feel my heart break. I missed my brother so much, but I then realized he was not coming back and I would not see him again. I felt lonely and abandoned, and in that moment all of my emotions which I could not put into words, came to the surface.
This was a loss that has always stayed with me. I also never heard from my brother again until well into my adult years. I am happy for people who have siblings with whom to share their joys and sorrows. My own two children have each other and I try to teach them never to take each other for granted. I always tell them that none of us knows what tomorrow may hold because one moment something is ours and the next moment it can be gone forever. I also try to teach them the value of spiritual truth which will abide forever. Hans Christian Andersen says, “The human life is a story told by God.” No matter what the story, may it always bring honor to the One who has created us. God’s love can heal all broken hearts. I truly believe that!
Over 30 years would pass before I would see my brother again. What a fine young man he had become. At the heart of our loss is gain - unseen, and yet eternal!
